There were tent campers, car campers and vans and everyone had space including the bison and prarie dogs. The Lakota Native American tribe were the first to call this area mako sica. We had no problem with our 24 foot rig, but would not recommend to bring a larger vehicle.

We always try to find free camping as much as possible so when we found a campground in a national park that was free, we were there.The campground was a huge circle with 25 parking spaces around the border. The boondock areas north of the park are better suited to shoulder seasons IMHO. As others have noted, it regularly gets to over 100 degrees during the summer, though it can cool down to 70 at night.

Sage creek campground is at the very western part of the Badlands National Park. In the hot summer, I prefer using a campground to boondocking instead of running the generator 12-15 hours a day.
